Up until 1904, things were essentially identical to the real world, and it wouldn't be until five years later that the differences would become clear at all. While no one is certain of why, starting in 1904, some children were born with the ability to harness magic. How this was discovered is just as much a mystery as why it happened at all, but as time went on, many young children would set to studying magic, in hopes that they could perform such acts. In some ways, the world didn't change much. Magic was common, but not so common that someone without magic is at a disadvantage in life. And over time, any widespread resentment between those who could do magic and those who couldn't, as well as any suspicions that those magical might be gods or the like, faded away. Some people can do magic, others can't, but generally speaking, life goes on.

Then, in 1921, the magical creatures started showing up. These creatures were often harmless until provoked, but not always. There were certainly new dangers. On the other hand, some seemed almost more human than creature, and certain species integrated into humanity quite well as fellow citizens. Other creatures, more animal-like, were well-suited to being companions or pets, and took to that quite well. Overall, it was another adjustment that was eventually made, though not without drama and tension. It has mostly cleared, but there's always some people who distrust creatures.

What isn't really understood, even in modern times, is that these creatures previously thought to be of myth and legend quite literally popped into existence due to human folklore. After all, humans have magic now, and while an individual's magic is specialized, there is an underlying current of "simply magical" to it. As such, these creatures' presence in the human mind caused them to exist through human magic. This may be why, despite different regional origins, they are equally distributed worldwide. It is worth noting they can all speak any local language in addition to their native tongues.

In this universe, magic comes in different varieties. These varieties are known as Styles, which is a bit of a misnomer: All magic is inbred and performed in the same manner, through focus and simple body motion, with everything about the latter varying depending on personal preference. A human with magic will generally be able to use one Style - but some individuals, often considered lucky, have two.
